There are two visible republican candidates for governor of Michigan, who will be elected during the November 2010 elections. They are Congressman Pete Hoekstra of Holland, and former state senator and representative Mike Bouchard.
Hoekstra has been in Washington for the past decade, working as part of the U.S. House of Representatives, and is known for taking firm positions on almost every important issue he has been involved with. During his tenure as top republican of the House Intelligence Committee, Hoekstra has done a commendable job, since his appointment during the Bush administration. Hoekstra has kept close touch with local minorities groups, including the Hispanic community, through aides who have done a remarkable job. Still, Hoekstra has been implacable record attacking illegal immigration, while supporting the hard-line GOP position. However, he never has reached the ridicule standards of his counterpart Mike Bouchard. Bouchard, who is also the Oakland County sheriff, was a relative unknown who resurfaced politically speaking back in 2006, when he challenged Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow. Bouchard presented himself as the champion among those who fustigated illegal immigration, and as a faithful supporter of the George W. Bush administration. During the 2008 political campaign, Bouchard supported Mitt Romney’s, former governor of the state of Massachusetts, aspiration for the Republican Party presidential nomination. It is worth noting that Romney was the most conservative of the four republican finalists. Judging from a dispute about a prisoner suffering mental health problems that Bouchard had with Dan Kelly, founder of Rose Hill Cente, last September, we can assume that he is someone with a very stern way of thinking, who values the punitive side of the law at all cost. Bouchard has chosen current Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land as his political running mate. We all know Land is responsible for making a law, that only someone who is a legal resident of United States has the right to have a Michigan Driver’s License. The State of Michigan needs solutions for its grave troubles, and needs leaders that will act with good judgment when trying to find these solutions. At the moment, there are no clear front runners for the Democratic nomination, and it is very possible that whoever wins the 2010 elections will be from the Republican Party. Let’s hope it is not Bouchard.
