“Latinos en America” A Small Caress After a Thousand Slaps in the Face Several organizations that defend the right of immigrants have initiated a series of protests against CNN’s Lou Dobbs. The reason behind these protests, the ardent campaign implemented for years during his program by the popular TV personality against Latino immigrants. He (Dobbs) has gone from accusing Latinos of using government resources that should only be used for/by American citizens, to pointing them out as dangerous terrorist that put in danger our national safety. That propaganda, that could be considered racist, consists of taking the most negative portion of the Hispanic community living in United States, such as drug dealers and gang members, to present them as prototype of all Latinos. In order to protect himself, Lou Dobbs always refer to the Hispanics immigrants as “Illegal Aliens”, and a few times has gone as far as saying that he hates them. Lou Dobbs has every right to express himself in any way, shape or form he so desires about what he thinks about illegal immigration, because we live in a country that protects the freedom of speech. But at the same time the United States is an organized country where there are laws that need to be obeyed and rights that need to be respected. Law condemns racism, because it is a damaging sentiment that has caused millions of people to become innocent victims of indescribable cruelties. CNN should have a bit more respect towards the Hispanic Community, even more when we consider the many benefits received through “CNN en Español” (CNN in Spanish). Now, CNN pretends to cure the damage caused by Lou Dobbs and Glenn Beck, presenting “Latinos in America,” a news report about the way Hispanics live in the United States, something the Hispanic community is thankful for. Still, the best gift that CNN could give our community is to do something to stop the campaign of hate spearheaded by Dobbs and Glenn. CNN is a very powerful TV station, with the unquestionable capability to influence effectively on American society. Campaigns such as the one lead by Lou Dobbs could generate racial hatred, something that the United States doesn’t need at this time. We believe that claims made to CNN by organizations that defend the rights of immigrants are justified and the TV station should respond responsibly. There are many “Lou Dobbs” in this country, but there is only one CNN. The blame is not the pigs, but he that feeds it. |
