An Irresponsible OAS American Ambassador

Lewis Amselem is the United States permanent representative in front of the Organization of American States (OAS). Last Monday September 28th, during the meeting where the issue about Honduras political crisis was being discussed, Amselem described the deposed President Manuel Zelaya as “irresponsible and idiot,” because he decided to come back to Tegucigalpa, something that according to Amselem only served to worsen the political crisis.

From our point of view, Zelaya’s decision cannot be seen as the factor that worsen the crisis, but as a responsible act towards those who elected him and claim for a return to constitutionalism. It sure was a risky proposition, still a valiant and coherent action trying to force action against a small group of delinquents that decided to make the system work for their own benefits, without any regards for the Honduran people, breaking every law that set limitations for democracy and a civilized society.

However, we see Lewis Amselem conduct as a very irresponsible attitude that could only make sense if he wasn’t a person with common sense; to take side with a group that precipitated a political coup to depose a democratically elected President, is completely opposed to the what the rest of the World think, and what United States stands for.

Only a twisted mind would dare to blame President Zelaya’s for all the problems suffered by Honduran citizens, and only that way could it be justified using military force to depose a democratically elected President in the middle of the night. Accusing President Zelaya of acting irresponsibly for returning to Honduras while the army of the acting President Roberto Michelleti surrounds the Brazilian Embassy, hoping to have a chance to arrest him or kill him, that is an unlimited show of irresponsibility. A futile attempt to forgive and forget Roberto Michelleti for all his transgressions.

Amselem should have taken a minute to consider the important position that he occupy, before opening his mouth, since he not only represents United States while he sits at OAS meetings, he also represents the voice of the most powerful nation in the world, one that lends economical support to Honduras. United States posture will ultimately determine what will happen in Honduras.

Lewis Amselem, just as ex President Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Carl Rove, has occupied important positions, but his ultra conservative ideas no longer seem fit to the reality that we live, something that led the last administration to make terrible mistakes.

President Barack Obama openly opposed the Honduran coup and repeatedly rebuked Michelleti’s action, while voicing his desire to have the Centro American country return to a normal democratic life. Ambassador Amselem comments expressed exactly the opposite, and even worse, make United States a forced accomplice of whatever may happen because of what he said.

If President Obama’s administration has a different agenda that the one voiced by Amselem, especially about the Latin American situation, the current OAS ambassador is not the best man for that job.
